The Inspo’d mobile application is a self betterment app designed to provide choice and routine to the user for daily self-improvement.

Duration: 1 month

Tools: Google Forms, Google Sheets, Google Slides, Google Docs, Zoom Meetings, Lucidspark, figma, pen and paper, and Notion

Overview

Summary:

The Inspo’d App was developed to provide daily motivational inspiration for users through the ability of choice.  It can be used at any point during the day and provides a daily Inspo’d selection in the following categories: Gratitude Journal, Music/Podcast, Publications, Quotes, and Videos.
If the daily Inspo’d prompt in any category does not appeal to the user, they can select from a variety of subcategories to  complete as many activities as needed each day.  The user also has the ability to connect with a community of like-minded users, set reminder notifications, track their usage, and  lock down the app with a personal passcode.

Deliverables:

1. Performing a SWOT analysis of other inspirational applications
2. Administering a current online survey
3. Conducting private interviews
4.Creating personas
5. Mapping a user journey
6. Listing user stories

  7. Designing a site map
  8. Outlining a user flow
  9. Creating sketches
10. digitizing wireframes
11. Producing low-fidelity and high-fidelity prototypes
12. Facilitating usability testing

The Problem:

  1. The Covid Pandemic created isolation and self-doubt within society during the lockdown.
  2. To live a happier and more fulfilling life, many users need motivation to find inspiration.
  3. Most current motivational apps are narrow focused requiring users to utilize multiple resources.

The Audience:

Key demographics

  • Age range: 18-54
  • Gender: Male/Female
  • Common Professions: any

Key psychographics

  • Values: Self-care, personal betterment, positivity, self-confidence, sense of accomplishment, pride and/or identity
  • Likes to: be happy, be inspired
  • Wants to: be a better person, eliminate negativity, reflect on the good in life

The Solution:

To help individuals in society become more motivated and inspired to live life to the fullest, I have created an app that can be incorporated into a daily success routine.  Through consistent use of the provided content centered around reading, listening, and writing activities, self-betterment can be achieved.

Usability Tests

  • 6 Users Tested
  • 5 Tasks
    • 1st: Using this app, how will you find a daily inspirational quote of the day?
      • Success Rate: 5 out of 6 (83%)
    • 2nd: Imagine you are looking for a funny video to lift your spirits.  You want to watch something with a dog being silly.  How would you find this using the app?
      • Success Rate: 5 out 6 (83%)
    • 3rd: When you first downloaded and opened the app you registered and set up a profile.  You set a notification up for nighttime but feel you need one in the morning to remind you to use the app.  What steps would you take to add this notification?
      • Success Rate: 6 out 6 (100%)
    • 4th:  You’ve just completed the daily gratitude journal but want to do more.  How would complete another activity?
      • Success Rate: 6 out 6 (100%)
    • 5th: You’ve been using the app for a while now and you’re curious how frequently you’ve used the app this month.  How can you check this?
      • Success Rate: 6 out 6 (100%)
  • Average time on all 5 tasks as a whole
    • 25 minutes

Problem #1

  • Icons weren’t identifiable for everyone and created struggles or confusion when completing tasks.
  • Considering putting some type of title for the icon or typing the icon in with the title on the home page.

Problem #2

  • Daily Inspirational topic seemed too simplistic.  User breezed past it and wanted to do more with the app.
  • Find a way to make it stand out more.  Possibly make the title clearer, “Your Daily Inspo Quote”

Next Steps

Update will have the following changes to app:

  • Clear, identifiable connection between icons and inspirational categories
  • Clearer, defined inspiration of the day for inspirational categories
  • Design the menu screen with search options, listed out categories and subcategories, and a way contact support so users can submit issues or suggestions to the app.

Ispo’d Capstone Learnings

  1. Text overlaid with pictures is difficult.  You need to find the right balance between the boldness of the image and the font’s color where both can be seen and read.  Sometimes it’s impossible to do.
  2. I originally started out with a particular audience in mind for this project but as the research stage and deliverables progressed the audience scope began to shift and the vision I originally had evolved into something bigger and better.  Therefore, you never know how the research is going to impact the course of the project.  You just need to let it guide you and trust that it’s leading you into a direction that will be best for the final product.
